Davidson County, NC, regulates solar farms, defined as arrays generating photovoltaic power beyond the site’s principal use. Solar farms are permitted with a Class A special use permit in zones RA-1, RA-2, RA-3, RC, OI, LI, HI, and PEC. They must comply with setbacks required by zoning districts and be screened from routine view from public rights of way and residential properties. Solar farms have a 25 ft height limit and a minimum lot size of 5 acres. There is a solar moratorium in place starting in December 2024 through December 2026.
