Alleghany County, NC, zoning ordinance classifies solar energy facilities as high-impact land uses.Electricity generating facilities, including solar farms, must be set back 100 feet from side and rear property lines not adjoining a road, and 50 feet along all other property lines, with these distances halved when adjoining other high-impact uses. Facilities must not be located within 2,000 feet of protected uses such as dwelling units. A minimum 6-foot security fence topped with one foot of barbed wire is required around the operational area, and structures may not exceed 40 feet in height. Landscaping plans are mandated.
